Ottawa Police funding needs to be redistributed, no positive experiences to speak of
First and foremost the OPS budget is an absolute embarassment, I've been around some of the worst communities in Ottawa and always been told there wasn't enough funding to resolve issues, we have kids who can't read, teachers buying their own supplies, but more than enough overtime to pay some overfunded overweight officer to overtime to 'serve his community'.
My only interaction with the OPP is as follows.
One night as I was driving to a friend's house, I parked an instantly lights came on, two officers came out with flashlights on screaming at me. I wasn't told what I was suspected of doing, they began shouting questions at me with flashlights inches away from my face. They were trying to intimidate me, they said they could see beer cans in my car (there wasn't) and that they could smell the liquor off of me (I hadn't been drinking).
After a few minutes of successfully answering their confusing questions like saying my postal code forwards and backward and other frustrating and embarrassing things they said I ran a stop sign (I hadn't) and clearly I was driving drunk.
I informed them I hadn't been drinking and I'd take a breathalyzer to prove it. They got visibly upset that I'd take a breathalyzer (why I'll never know) and seemed set on just charging me with whatever they felt like.
I took the breathalyzer and they didn't share my result but in their opinion, I "Definitely wasn't drinking, no way" clearly they were upset that they looked stupid, I asked for my read out and they refused got in their car and wrote me a warning ticket for running the stop sign.
All I could think about was how the experience would be different if I wasn't white.
There are often people having a mental health crisis in my neighbourhood and I feel like I can't call the police because they'll just execute the person for being an inconvenience. If the police wants to restore the faith of the community they'll accept that their role is not needed for every interaction.
