A city that is more connected with reliable, safe and accessible mobility options

Whether you choose to walk, wheel, drive, cycle, use transit or a combination of ways to move around the city, transportation and mobility affects everyone. And with a population over 1 million and a land mass 4.4 times the size of the City of Toronto, Ottawa has unique urban, suburban and rural components. Ottawa has 6,100 kilometres of existing roads, culverts and sewers and more than 2,300 kilometres of rural roads. To put this into context, 37% of our infrastructure is rural.

The City is responding to evolving travel patterns and is working to increase connectivity, reliability, safety and accessibility to meet Ottawa’s mobility needs. We are also focused on supporting transit and active transportation because they are crucial to advance the City’s climate change goals and to create a healthier, more equitable and inclusive community.

The Transportation Master Plan will prioritize future road, transit and active transportation projects to support growth and development and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We aim to improve road safety through programs such as traffic calming and integrated speed management. Supports will be advanced for people with accessibility needs to get where they want to go, and active transportation work will focus on connecting areas of the city for pedestrians and cyclists by ensuring critical walking and cycling links and networks.

As we review our services, our goal is to identify savings and improvements so that we can reinvest in this critical priority.
