A city that is green and resilient
Ottawa is fortunate to be a city of vast geography where rivers meet surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes. However, climate change is affecting our community, as it is affecting the world. Our resiliency is challenged every day by climate change, as Ottawa continues to experience warmer, wetter and more unpredictable weather.
How do we ensure we’re able to mitigate these changes and protect our environment at the same time? The future liveability of Ottawa depends on a natural and built environment that is healthy and able to cope with change.
Tangible actions to protect our environment
The City of Ottawa is committed to being a greener and more resilient city and is taking a number of steps to help us reach our goals, including:
Reducing our emissions, from our fleet, transit, and solid waste, and at our facilities, including wastewater treatment.
Undertaking a Solid Waste Master Plan to better manage how we dispose of garbage to reduce emissions, promote recycling, and divert organic waste to help extend the life of our landfill.
Planting, growing and preserving the urban tree canopy in parks and along roadways, with a focus on neighbourhoods with low tree canopy cover.
Implementing a Climate Resiliency Strategy which will help us respond to the impacts of climate change and protect our people, infrastructure and services.
We’re also making the best possible decisions regarding the building and operating of our infrastructure through continued development of our asset management plans. Improving and maintaining key infrastructure in a state of good repair will also be priorities to ensure Ottawa’s built environment can withstand the pressures of extreme weather and changing climate conditions.
But we know more can be done to offer effective and efficient services.
