Defund and Abolish the Ottawa Police Services

The police state in Canada, specifically Ottawa, must be abolished. The existence of police in a community will always, always disproportionately harm and kill the BIPOC members, not to mention the Black trans population, citizens with limited or no housing options, with mental health crises, and the list goes on.

Body cameras do not work. Racial sensitivity training does not work. Bans on certain weapons or use of force options do not work. The systematic and systemic racism, sexism, xenophobic, transphobia, misogynist, misogynoir is deeply embedded and cannot be extracted or corrected. These beliefs and practices built and maintain the police state. Status quo (white) will be protected at the expense of those who require critical care, understanding, and compassion.

A community -- when provided with access to tools, resources, funding, and information -- will take care of itself. Mental health programs, safe and affordable housing options, access to food, access to education, free or affordable transportation, better job options. Defunding the OPS means money in the pocket of programs and initiatives that actually support and sustain a broken community.

If Minnesota can do it, so can we.

But if the powers that be in Ottawa will continue the tradition of lip service above real institutional change, the members of this community will do the work for you, which means you may not get a say when that change comes. Listen to the community leaders, the ones doing the hard and groundbreaking work to uproot the system. They know what should and can be done.

I’ve just read through this and I cannot believe what I just read, I’ve been a person of colour for nearly 20 years now & for you to suggest that all of us are affected by the Ottawa Police Services based on few altercations with BIPOC is disgusting, we are not brutalized by this “system”, we are law abiding citizens of colour. For you to dismantle police and to place trust into social workers and pure funds towards community members is a dangerous and fierce idea for our city, in reality it sounds like you want a safer organization to patrol and protect citizens and to that I say: Fund the OPS. This will help with “better training” even though the Ottawa Police Service and the fine hard working men and women of the law have done an excellent job over the years. You comparing the city of Ottawa to an entire state of Minnesota (which only attempted to disband the Minneapolis Police Department) is useless and only demonstrates how little you know about police work, the Minneapolis Police Department has had a long history of accused racism within the department and specific police brutality against BIPOC. However, the city of Minneapolis is also the largest city in the state of Minnesota and not to mention in a DIFFERENT COUNTRY. Disappointed to know that you think the entire BIPOC community are affected by police in Ottawa, you talk as if removing the entire budget from OPS will solve violent and regular crime all together. I do not want my city to look like Chicago, I’m glad people like you are not in positions of power within the city. If you think you speak for BIPOC, It’s unfathomable. You do not speak for all of us.

This is more about overall community safety Which has been destroyed by OPS and it's tactics. This is not just about race, it's about stopping tax funds from being used by OPS to do whatever they want with no public say. This is about everyone who is not a civilian in uniform being safe. OPS has become a threat to public saftey.
