Project Description

The City of Ottawa is looking for your feedback on the design for the replacement of the Heron Park Fieldhouse in Ward 17. The objective of this project is to complete a design that will meet community needs now and in the future.

The current building supports an outdoor rink, sports field, and wading pool, along with limited community programs and use. The proposed design is intended to support the recreational use of the amenities in the park. The fieldhouse design will include multi-purpose room(s), washroom(s) (barrier-free), a kitchenette, storage, and mechanical room.

Please review the concept plans in the "Documents" section to the right and provide any additional comments in the guest book or survey tabs below.

Hello,
Thanks for the opportunity to review and comment on the floor plan. Some thoughts:
Pros:
- Wonderful to see a formal entrance with vestibule
- Yes to the foldable partition to allow increased options for the multi-use room(s)
- Inclusion of a proper kitchen!
Cons:
- Two multi-purpose rooms is not enough. Wondering why so much space is given to the lengthy lobby corridor and why there are two interior universal washrooms. If the stand alone universal washroom was removed and the mech/electrical room relocated to that location, the office could be relocated to the vacated mech/elec space and the kitchen relocated to the vacated office space. The entrance to Multi-use Room 1 could be relocated to permit a 3rd room to be created where the kitchen had been.
Comment:
- Assuming that the floors will be concrete, can they be heated? If certain activities (such as yoga, children's play group, etc) are to continue or be added in the new building, this will be essential.

Overall, very much looking forward to the new building!

Parking spaces should be kept at an absolute minimum. There is ample on-street parking already available on Clover, which is a very wide road. Adding parking spots will take away from the greenspace in the park and just add more concrete. I understand there is a requirement for an accessible parking space, but there is no need for two additional spots.

An exterior water fountain that allows for water bottles to be refilled, similar to at Britannia, Petrie Island, etc would be great, particularly as this park has a wading pool, playground, and outdoor gym with a field for sports.

The community center needs to have at least 2 large rooms preferably one that can be split into smaller ones if need be. It should also have a small kitchen for our carnivals or pot lucks etc... It would also be nice if it could be used for kids to have some indoor activities e.g. arts and crafts, sports, etc... We would also need washroom with a possibility of change rooms. It would also be nice to have a slot on the outside that leads into a bin so people can drop off their bottles for Randy for the community fund if they don't know how to reach him. An outdoor sitting space would also be nice to have so that people can sit outside, fundraisers can be held or even music played. It would also be nice to get anyone with artistic talent or even the kids in the neighborhood do some murals on either the inside or outside walls. We could also benefit from having a garden area to plant flowers, vegetables etc..

Also. Besides office space and a unisex change room, in terms of flexibility it should have one big space that can be subdivided into smaller spaces as required.

My past experience being involved in a community board tells me the future field house requires an actual kitchen with a dishwasher, stove, fridge only and freezer only.

A very necessary rebuild. Thanks to the community, the councillor's office and city staff for all your hard work.
