We need social services, NOT POLICE

I've lived in Ottawa my entire life, and the police have only gotten worse.

Our city could be a leader in community safety if we defund the OPS.

It's frankly ludicrous that they've been granted so much money, when they're so incredibly ineffective. It's a bad investment - an investment in violence, racism, and classism.

It disgusting to overhear the things officers say about the people they're supposed to protect.

I'm aware that 80% of the budget is for salaries - just imagine if those people were employed in social services, healthcare, housing services!

I'm aware that there are beaureacratic barriers to overcome.

I'm aware that it is not an instant change.

I still call for defunding.

The email reply from Jim Watson about defunding is downright condescending.

"I am surprised by the inconsistency of some who regularly demand a greater police presence in their communities and then turn around to support deep cuts to the police service."

What is this nonsense? Stop it.

We know what we're asking for.

We know what must be done.

Defund the police.
