PRIORITIZE WELL BEING OVER POWER

The time is now for a major, overdue change in how the city of Ottawa approaches policing and the grossly over-funding thereof - defund, better yet - ABOLISH. Rebuild a system that promotes safety, with actually well-trained personnel that can provide and fulfill services such as a wellness check without bring armed.

I'm hardly the only person here saying this, but I'm happy to be joining a chorus. Defunding the Ottawa Police Service, and redistributing those funds to help combat homelessness, aid in our communities' mental and physical health, and protect our environment would have huge impacts on our community safety and well being. We should investing in supporting the community we have, not unjustly punishing BIPOC communities and the mentally ill. The funds that go to the OPS could have huge impacts in improving lives, rather than making them harder at best, and ending them at worst. We can absolutely imagine…

It’s time to shift our focus from funding a police force that has lost the trust of the public to funding community and social services that are better equipped to tackle the root of our issues as a city. Change is inevitable; this current system isn’t working and needs to be built from the ground up.Defund the police. Fund our communities.
