Examples of when policing in Ottawa didn't work for residents

I was born and raised in Ottawa and I have lived here for most of life. Here are a few examples of when policing didn't work for Ottawa residents that I witnessed.

1. I lived on the main floor or an apartment. I had one upstairs neighbour and one downstairs.

One evening the upstairs neighbour had a devastating accident and resulted in loss of life. It took about a dozen officers and detectives 12 hours and 2 crime scenes to listen to all of the witnesses who said it was an accident before they finally left and allowed people to begin the mourning process.

The downstairs neighbour was a blatant woman abuser. It took about 6-8 detectives 2 months of showing up at the same time every week day(9 a.m.) and not reaching him because he would be at work. I finally told them that maybe they would have some luck if they spoke with their coworkers and determined that he was never around at that time, to bring this guy in on a domestic abuse warrant.

Another example is in a community that I worked in. A single mother was arrested for sex work and her child was left crying on the sidewalk between the ages of 10-12. The police left with the mother with no one to stay with the child.

The police are demonstrating that they don't work for us with the budget that we give them. We need to defund the police and invest in programs that have better outcomes.
