Policy Context

The 2023 Transportation Master Plan identified a list of projects intended to address missing links in the City's active transportation network. The list of active transportation projects was developed based on public consultation, Councillor input and a city-wide network review. Cycling facilities on Tompkins Avenue, Duford Drive, Prestone Drive and Major Road were included on the approved list of active transportation projects. In addition, Tompkins Avenue and Duford Drive are on the City's future crosstown bikeway network.

Local Context

The area surrounding Tompkins Avenue, Duford Drive, Prestone Drive and Major Road has several community amenities including Queenswood Ridge Park, Ravine Park, Queenswood Heights Community Centre, Reine-des-Bois Catholic Elementary School and La Source Catholic Elementary School. Implementing bike lanes in this area is expected to encourage cycling and improve safety for people on bikes of all ages and abilities travelling to local amenities.

OC Transpo routes 35, 37, 131, 232, 234 and 632 provide service in the area.

Project Details

The project proposes the following roadway modifications.

Tompkins Avenue

  • Painted bike lanes in both directions (width varying from 1.5 m to 2.0 m) from Major Road to approximately 20 m west of Tenth Line Road
  • Removal of on-street parking from Tompkins Avenue
  • Tompkins Avenue is scheduled for asphalt resurfacing in spring/summer 2024. To use City funds efficiently, the bike lanes are proposed to be implemented at the time of resurfacing.

Duford Drive

  • Painted bike lanes in both directions (width varying from 1.5 m to 1.8 m) from St. Joseph Boulevard to Lacroix Avenue (northern intersection)
  • Removal of on-street parking from Duford Drive southbound

Prestone Drive

  • Painted bike lanes in both directions (width varying from 1.6 m to 2.0 m) from Tompkins Avenue to Amiens Street
  • Removal of on-street parking from Prestone Drive southbound

Major Road

  • Painted bike lanes in both directions (width of 1.5 m) from Tompkins Avenue to Duford Drive
  • Removal of on-street parking on Major Road between Tompkins Avenue and Duford Drive
