There is opportunity to add a basketball court to Alda Burt Park at the Dempsey Community Centre. The proposed configuration is illustrated below and available for download in the Document Tab.
The project will also involve construction of an accessible pathway to the sidewalk on St. Laurent Boulevard. The pathway would be routed near to the play area to increase accessibility to the existing play area. Bike racks and new benches may be provided.
Renewal of the play structures is not within the scope of this project.
Construction Timeline: Construction is slated to begin in 2026, but before we break ground, we would like your input.
How to Get Involved: Share your comments by completing our online feedback form. It only takes a few minutes to complete. The purpose of this engagement is to collect feedback that may improve the final design.
Please note that the final facility may differ from the presented concept. Public consultation responses, technical detailing, supply availability and financial constraints are some of the factors that may influence a change.
What we Learned
Thank you to everyone who participated in the public consultation. The consultation statistics show that 322 visitors viewed the website on Engage Ottawa during the consultation period with 167 residents taking further actions such as downloading documents (28 downloads) or navigating multiple project pages (38 instances). Engagement at the highest level occurred through the survey tool, with 16 respondents providing input.
Residents expressed strong support for the new court, noting it fills a recreation gap.
Residents supported the court as a community asset.
Many emphasized preserving the tobogganing hill and adjusting the proposed 2.4 m asphalt path so it does not conflict with the sledding run.
Berming along St. Laurent was recommended to be gentle or located closer to the fence.
Lighting was widely requested both on the path and court.
Access improvements such as an accessible ramp from the community centre were suggested.
Additional buffers were requested to protect the playground from stray balls and noise.
Additional amenities like central benches, shade structures, and bike racks were favored.
Several residents requested outdoor fitness features to diversify park use.
Comments also noted the need to reduce ball escape toward neighbouring driveways.
Next Steps & Decisions
The engagement phase is now archived, and project decisions are being finalized using the collected feedback. Participants can expect future updates through the Engage Ottawa project page as the park progresses into subsequent planning and construction stages.
