Mowat Farm Park, located in Ward 3 (Barrhaven West), is a valued neighbourhood park offering play structures, asphalt pathways, soccer fields, and green space. The City of Ottawa is planning to replace the aging and non-compliant wooden play structure, which is currently in poor condition and no longer safe for use.
As part of the design process, two concept options were shared with the community for feedback. Survey results showed a preference for the Farm Concept by a close margin. Many respondents noted that this option resonated strongly due to its connection to the park’s name and local rural history.
While the Farm Concept was preferred overall, several respondents expressed strong interest in the climbing elements proposed in the Nature Concept. In response, climbing monkey bar elements have been incorporated into the Farm Concept to reflect this feedback.
Some respondents were disappointed that traditional belt swings were not included, as only an accessible disc saucer swing was proposed. The project team explored the option of adding a traditional two-bay swing set alongside the accessible swing; however, there is insufficient space within the play area to safely accommodate both.
Concept Options Reviewed:
Farm Concept (Preferred): Includes tractor and cow spring toys inspired by the area’s rural history, with added climbing elements.
The selected concept will include:
An accessible disc swing
New accessible benches
Modern play structures for two age groups: 18 months–5 years and 5–12 years
Improved surfacing and accessible pathways
You can view the proposed concept by downloading the design files from the Document Library on the right-hand panel.
Project Timeline:
Construction: 2026
This project is being delivered through the City’s Lifecycle Replacement Program. The scope and budget have been approved and are focused solely on the replacement of the play structure. Upgrades to other park amenities are not included as part of this project.
