The Public Art piece selected through jury is Signal Pine by Amy Thompson will be installed in Laroche Park Autumn 2024.

The artwork by local artist Amy Thompson entitled Signal Pine, set in Laroche Park, will be the first in the City of Ottawa’s public art collection to be located in Mechanicsville. The theme of the artwork pays homage to the area’s rich industrial history.

The sculptural artwork associates human-scale seating elements with a sculptural tree symbolizing the pine trees that once covered this land. By combining contemporary forms with natural patterns, the design incorporates patterns inspired by the interdependence of water, rail, and lumber. Tactile materials such as stone encourage interactive play and allow the work to integrate more naturally within the environment.

The artwork serves as both a wayfinding feature and a gathering space, inviting visitors to explore, connect, and reflect on the community’s cultural and industrial heritage.
