Cobourg Street, between Beausoleil Drive and Rideau Street, is a two-lane collector road with floating bike lanes (meaning a bike lane that has motor vehicle space on either side of it), parking lanes, and sidewalks on both sides. Cobourg Street is identified as part of the Cross-Town Bikeway Network. It has a posted speed limit of 30 km/h. There are two transit stops on this segment of Cobourg Street, both servicing routes 7 and 19.
This section of Cobourg is scheduled for asphalt resurfacing in 2025. It has been identified as a priority to resolve issues with vibrations resulting from heavy roadway traffic running over cracks in the asphalt. The City is using the opportunity presented by this resurfacing to make improvements to the cycling facilities. To improve cycling safety and comfort, the City is planning to modify the existing roadway layout as follows:
Swap the relative positions of the existing parking lanes and bike lanes. This means that the bike lanes will be moved next to the curb with on-street parking located between the bike lanes and the general traffic lanes.
A concrete curb will be installed between the bike lane and the on-street parking to provide further protection for people on bikes.
Other minor modifications at either end of the project area to ensure the re-located bike lane connects properly to the existing cycling infrastructure outside of the project area.
Removal of approximately five (5) on-street parking spaces on the east side of Cobourg Street between Rideau Street and Tormey Street.
Questions and comments can be sent to the City project manager:
