Clarke Avenue
Local Context
Clarke Avenue is a local road with a posted speed limit of 40 km/h.
The new sidewalk will tie into the existing sidewalk on Clarke Avenue west of Claude Street that leads to Queen Elizabeth Public School and to the existing sidewalk on Cummings Avenue, completing the gap in the pedestrian network.

Design Features
The following pedestrian improvements are proposed as part of this project:
New 2 metre wide sidewalk on the north side of Clarke Avenue to tie into the existing sidewalks on Clarke Avenue and Cummings Avenue.
To minimize impacts to trees, the existing road width ranging from 8.0 to 8.6 metres wide will be narrowed to 7.5 metres.
To fit the new sidewalk, City-owned portions of some driveway accesses and front lawns will need to shortened.
On-street parking will be permitted on one side of the street where the road is narrowed, on the same side as the proposed sidewalk.
Pedestrian crossing improvements at Clarke Avenue at Claude Street, Trojan Avenue and Borthwick Avenue include crosswalks and reduced curb radii to shorten pedestrian crossing distances and to help reduce the speed of turning vehicles.
There are existing temporary traffic calming measures on Clarke Avenue showing that there are existing concerns. Permanent traffic calming measures in the form of intersection narrowings have been incorporated in the design.
Streetlighting improvements are being examined.
