Canoe Park: New Park Development

The City is looking for your feedback on the concept plan and proposed equipment for Canoe Park, a new park in Ward 3 (Barrhaven West). The 0.51 hectare park, addressed 228 Conservancy Drive, is generally located south of Strandherd Drive and east of Borrisokane Road.

When reviewing the proposed equipment for Canoe Park, it is important to be aware of the equipment that already exists in the other parks nearby. The context plan, available in the ‘Document Library’ (located on the right side of the screen), shows the location of Canoe Park in relation to the two closest existing parks: Albion Falls Park and Clarity Park. Both of these parks provide play equipment for children ranging in age from 2 – 12 years old; Clarity Park also offers a splash pad. Therefore, to help increase the diversity of equipment in the local parks, two options are being proposed for Canoe Park: Option 1 proposes to include rock climbing and exercise equipment focused for teens and adults; Option 2 proposes a play structure for kids which provides a different type of play from what currently exists in the neighbourhood, and basic exercise equipment for teens and adults. Both options include sand play and swings.

What We Heard

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Canoe Park public consultation.

The consultation statistics show that 64 participants looked at the project website, and of those, 11 individuals provided responses to the survey that was posted.

Two options were provided for the recreation equipment:

• Option 1: a teen & adult focused climbing structure and exercise equipment, or
• Option 2: a 5 – 12 year old climbing structure and minimized adult exercise equipment.

70% of participants preferred Option 1; this is the equipment we will be proceeding with.

Requests and comments regarding the equipment and/or design of the park provided by the participants:

• Option 1 provides an opportunity to bring people of all ages and genders together and provides a more unique recreational experience.
• Option 1 invests in places for teens.
• Porta potty requested.

The design team will determine if the suggestions can be incorporated into the design.
