Increasing Community Services - Defunding Police

Hello,

I am commenting to support the calls by citizens of Ottawa to defund the Ottawa Police Service. As a person who has lived in the downtown core for more than two decades, I have not generally had positive interactions with the police. And as a middle aged, well educated white person, I know that my experiences have no doubt been more positive than many people's. As a citizen, I support increased funding for housing, support for people who use drugs, education, libraries, and public transportation. I support funding for harm reduction initiatives like safe injection sites and managed alcohol programs. I do not support police being responsible for mental wellness checks, domestic disputes, homeless issues etc. I believe that Ottawa could set a profound example by reducing funds for policing and increasing funds instead for social services. Having citizens of our city feel that they are supported and cared for with resources to lift people beyond poverty and suffering, is a goal that I would like to see in your plan.
