Alternatives to police
I am very disturbed by all the recent highly publicized incidents of police brutality against Black and Indigenous people in Canada, and I have not forgotten the death of Abdirahman Abdi in Ottawa. It is ny belief that police don't keep us safe and, in fact, they make certain members of our community less safe. I would like to see:
-That city council never approve another increase to the Ottawa police budget (that is the bare minimum. Ideally I would like to see planned decreases. I support Jeff Leiper's idea of council mandating a decrease in the police budget, and then increasing taxes to replace that funding in order to spend it on other things);
-Increased investments in affordable housing, public transit (heck, make transit FREE, then we won't need police as fare inspectors!), and mental health and addiction services;
-Invest in alternatives to the police for addressing social/mental health issues, such as expanding the pilot project that the Rideau BIA ran that provided an alternative to calling 911 for business owners on Rideau street.
