An online survey was conducted from August 23 – September 24, 2024, thank you to all respondents who took the time to provide comments on this proposal.
A total of 106 votes were submitted and 90% supported the change from tennis to pickleball. The change from public access to club-run received 63% support. A summary of the comments received is included below:
Public access tennis and pickleball courts are available at 3 locations within a 3.5 km radius of Pierre Rocque Park: Marsha Park, Bilberry Park, Racette Park.
A number of respondents expressed concerns regarding waitlist to join the tennis club: The club's goal is to create more access to pickleball and tennis for the community. The Club's approach will be determined once any new requirements or restrictions set out in the City's Outdoor Tennis and Pickleball Strategy are known.
A few comments requested formalizing the timeframes for public access. The formalized timeframes for public access will be provided by the Club following the completion of repairs to the site. City's Outdoor Tennis and Pickleball Strategy will also advise on the requirements and restrictions for the timing of public access to the courts.
Overall, the comments indicated support for the existing courts to receive improvements and be maintained by the Orleans Tennis Club.
The City of Ottawa is seeking input on the proposed replacement of the two tennis courts for 4-6 exclusively pickleball courts in the north area of Pierre Rocque Park, located at 257 Joseph Drouin Avenue.
In September 2023, the Orleans Tennis Club were approved for funding from the community partnership minor capital program to convert the north tennis courts in Pierre-Rocque Park to exclusively pickleball. Proposing to convert the two existing tennis courts to 4-6 pickleball courts; repairing cracks on the court surface, new acrylic paint, adding pickleball lines, pickleball nets, repairs to the fencing, and a second court access door.
The current tennis courts are public access, which are available on a first-come, first served basis and players are encouraged to limit game times to 30 minutes.
Upon completion the Orleans Tennis Club would offer members private court reservations and sports programming (e.g. drop-in play, skill-based leagues, special events, and clinics). As a not-for-profit Club, member fees are modestly priced to cover operating expenses (e.g. court maintenance, equipment, and online court reservation system fees).
The public consultation for the Pierre Rocque Park pickleball will be open for comments until September 24th. Following the consultation period a summary of the comments received will be posted back to engage Ottawa.
