Lorry Greenberg Drive (Hunt Club Road to Pike Street)

Local Context

Lorry Greenberg Drive is a two-lane collector road with a 50 km/h speed limit. The City’s Transportation Master Plan identifies that the primary function of collector roads is to serve neighborhood travel between local roads and major collector roads or arterial roads. Compared to arterial roads, collector roads operate with reduced traffic speed and volume making them better suited for accommodating people cycling.

This project area is adjacent to dense residential housing and community facilities including the Diane Deans Greenboro Community Centre, the Lorry Greenberg Library, Bruff Park, and many local streets and multi-use paths. South of Hunt Club Road, the Blossom Park and Timbermill communities are accessed via low volume local streets. East of Pike Street the Gloucester Presbyterian Church, Roberta Bondar Public School, St. Marguerite d’Youville School, Pike Park, and Winterwood Park are accessed via Lorry Greenberg Drive and off-road multi-use paths.

There are currently no cycling facilities within the project limits. This project will introduce new cycling facilities that will improve accessibility and connectivity.

Project Details

The City is planning to implement painted bike lanes on Lorry Greenberg Drive from Hunt Club Road to Pike Street, where feasible within the existing curb-to-curb space. At Pike Street, these facilities will tie into the planned neighbourhood traffic calming project along Pike Street and Lorry Greenberg Drive, as can be found on the project website. Adding bike lanes to Lorry Greenberg Drive is in line with the policies of the Transportation Master Plan and is informed bya recent parking assessment, which provided data on existing parking conditions within the project limits. The assessment identified available off-street and adjacent on-street parking capacity but also noted nighttime use of on-street spaces and potential for spillover into adjacent residential areas. For more details, please refer to the following assessment.

To provide these new active transportation facilities, the following changes to the roadway are planned:

  • On-street parking along Lorry Greenberg Drive between Hunt Club Road and Pike Street is planned to be removed where bike lanes are proposed. Reserved bike lanes and a no-stopping restriction will be implemented.

  • Modifications to Lorry Greenberg Drive include green pavement markings through high volume driveways and intersections, and sharrows near Hunt Club Road. These help to improve the visibility of cyclists and convey the expected presence of cyclists to other road users, especially where turning movements are expected or dedicated bike lanes cannot be accommodated.

  • Addition of 30 new on-street parking spaces on Zaidan Drive between Lorry Greenberg Drive and Johnston Road, to help accommodate the loss of parking on Lorry Greenberg Drive as a result of adding bike lanes.
