Your input matters: Tell us how we can improve the City's public engagement strategy
The City of Ottawa conducts hundreds of public engagement activities each year to gather input on a range of municipal policies, programs, and initiatives. All engagement plans are tailored to each initiative, based on the level of influence the public can have. These engagements take many forms, including public meetings (both in-person and virtual), surveys, online forums, and workshops, and are designed to ensure that residents have meaningful and equitable opportunities to inform the decisions that shape their city. One project may use multiple types of engagement to reduce barriers and gain higher representation from participants.
While many of these engagement activities have provided valuable insights and fostered constructive dialogue between the City and the public, others have presented opportunities for enhancement. Recognizing the importance of continuous improvement, the City remains committed to evaluating and developing its engagement practices to ensure they are effective, inclusive and transparent for years to come.
In June 2025, Council adopted a motion to strengthen public engagement by prioritizing equity, accessibility, and accountability. This motion acknowledged Council’s commitment to ensuring engagement efforts are not only broad-reaching but also inclusive and transparent.
The 2025 update to the Public Engagement Strategy responds by strengthening the City's engagement framework with a renewed guiding principles, clearer tools, and measurable goals. This will help the City to build deeper trust with residents and support more responsive, equitable, and effective decision-making.
