Consultation Results

Thank you to everyone who provided their input on the playground equipment options for Green Briar Park during the public consultation held in May. We heard from 17 residents, with 59 percent of residents preferring Concept A. The park is being designed to incorporate this playground equipment.

Based on the community feedback received and other influencing factors there have been some significant changes to the project as outlined below:

Area 1 – Maintained grassed area with swings.

The grassed area where the swings are currently located does not belong to the City of Ottawa. For many years, the City has maintained the swings and mowed the grass. This was being done without written consent or a signed contract between the two parties. After discussion with the property owner, they were unaware that the City has been encroaching for some time and expressed liability concerns with continued use by the public. As a result, the benches, trash receptacle and swing set seats and chains will be or have already been removed. The swing set frame will be removed this fall as part of the playground renewal project. The City will reinstate the private property to a grassed condition and following a warranty period, the City will no longer maintain the area east of the pathway.

Area 2 – Play equipment west of the pathway.

The play equipment in this area will be removed as part of the project and reinstated with grass. No play equipment shall remain as this area is part of the Bathurst Street open road allowance and not zoned for park use. Installing or maintaining play equipment in this area is to be avoided as the private land to the east may eventually be developed and the road right of way may be required for access.

Area 3 – Play structure

The current play structure and equipment will be removed and replaced with the selected play structure and equipment as per the Engage Ottawa survey results (Concept A). The layout of the new play structure and play equipment will be adapted to fit the existing area. A new concept plan showing the final layout of the play structure and play equipment will be posted to the Engage Ottawa site as soon as it is available. The City must ensure that accessibility regulations, standards and design guidelines are met when sites are redeveloped.

The central location will be made more visually accessible to Rochon Way by clearing non-native tree and shrub species and pruning up existing larger trees. This will allow occasional mowing and create better site lines to the street for safety. There are also number of dead Elm trees that will be removed as soon as Forestry’s schedule permits in advance of the playground renewal.

Construction is anticipated to commence in 2022.
