Project Status Update November 2023

The design concept has been slightly revised in response to public concerns about the health of existing trees and storm drainage. To view the revisions, please refer to the Project Status Update which is found to the lower right of the screen.

Key changes are:

  • Sidewalk narrowed to 1.8 m and shifted an additional 0.5 m into the street between 1240 Field Street and Berwick Avenue in order to reduce risk to trees;
  • Two trees marked for removal with two-for one replacements planned;
  • On-street parking will not be permitted on either side of the road between 1240 Field Street and Berwick Avenue.

Sidewalk Implementation

The City of Ottawa invites you to provide your comments on the proposed construction of a new 2.0 metre wide concrete sidewalk on the east/south side of Field Street between Woodroffe Avenue and Major Street, approximately 220 m in length and on the west/north side of Field Street between Major Street and Iris Street, approximately 460 m in length.

The proposed sidewalk will connect to the existing sidewalk on the east side of Woodroffe Avenue at Field Street and on the south side of Iris Street at Field Street. The new concrete sidewalk on the east/south side of Field Street will replace the existing asphalt bus platform/sidewalk, approximately 35 m in length, along the front of St. Daniel School.

Construction of an 80-millimetre raised level 2 Type D PXO of Field Street on the northeast side of the Major Street intersection is proposed. A raised crossing will help make pedestrians more visible to drivers at the crossing and encourage drivers to reduce their speed. Drivers will be required to yield to crossing pedestrians.

This project is identified as a Phase 3 project in the 2013 Ottawa Pedestrian Plan and will complete a missing link in the pedestrian network providing improved connectivity to schools, parks and transit.

As a local road that leads directly to a school, Field Street should have a pedestrian facility, according to current City policy. The provision of a sidewalk aligns with the City’s transportation goals and objectives to maximize walkability and create safe pedestrian environments.

The sidewalk will provide greater walkability in this residential area facilitating access to St. Daniel School. The sidewalk will support pedestrians, including more vulnerable users such as children, seniors, wheelchair users and persons with vision impairment. Tactile walking surface indicators will be installed at pedestrian crossings along the new sidewalk. Stop signs and crosswalk markings will be added to local streets that the new sidewalk crosses to enhance pedestrian safety. In addition, corner radii will be tightened at intersections to reduce pedestrian crossing distances.

The proposed sidewalk will be installed within the City’s right-of-way. For much of its length, Field Street will be narrowed to 7.5 metres (about 1 metre less than existing width) to reduce the impacts to trees and on adjacent properties while still maintaining on-street parking on one side of the street. Landscaping and other features within the right-of-way may be impacted during construction. Please see the drawing below for the extent of the study area.

The City of Ottawa held a virtual open house on May 24, 2023 at 7:00pm, to discuss the project. A presentation was given by the City Project Manager.

Project details and drawings are found at the upper right side of this page.

An online survey open to the public from June 1 to June 23 is now closed. The "As-We-Heard-It" report summarising the survey results as well as input received by the city through telephone and email can now be accessed using the link at the right side of the screen. Thanks to all participants.

Comments can still be provided by telephone at 613-580-2424 ext 21795 or by email to the City Project Manager at robin.bennett@ottawa.ca.
