Consultation has concluded
Thank you to everyone who provided their input on the splash pad and playground equipment options for Barrett Farm Park. Six residents completed the survey with two preferring the Hockey theme, one preferring the Farm theme, and three preferring the Mixed theme. The comments are summarized as follows:
The mixing of the themes looks disjointed.
The Farm theme is more gender neutral as hockey is traditionally thought of as a boys’ sport.
Children who do not enjoy hockey may not enjoy the playground and splash pad to the same extent.
The Farm theme is more inclusive.
The Hockey theme looks more natural and represents our national sport.
Would there be a possibility to include bathrooms on site?
Efforts should be made to include accessibility features so that children of all abilities can play.
Results
The Farm theme has been selected for the park development in response to the public comments and for the following additional reasons:
The Farm theme playground includes an overhead climber, which is a popular play element for older children, while the Hockey theme does not.
The Farm theme swings include additional swing seats, which is preferred for a larger, neighbourhood park.
The Farm theme playstructure features a barn roof, which creates a stronger visual element compared to the leaf shade elements for the Hockey theme playstructure.
The playground equipment and safety surfacing are being designed to meet the Canadian Standards Association’s guidelines for developing playgrounds that are accessible to persons with disabilities.
The scope of the park development project does not include washroom facilities.
The City is looking for your feedback on the concept design for a new neighbourhood park named Barrett Farm Park in Leitrim. The park is located at 392 Barrett Farm Drive in the Findlay Creek Village community. The park has an area of approximately 2.0 hectares.
Proposed park amenities include a splash pad, playground areas, a shade structure, a basketball key and an intermediate soccer field. The concept plan drawings including images of three options for the splash pad and playground equipment can be accessedhere. The options include a farm theme, a hockey theme and a mixed farm and hockey theme. The farm theme reflects the former use of the subdivision lands as a farm, while the hockey theme was inspired by two residents from the farm, John Barrett and Fred Barrett, that played in the National Hockey League.
