Engagement Overview

Thank you to everyone who responded to the public engagement opportunity to review a proposed concept plan for a new Urban Park at the corner of Albert Street and Lyon Street. The engagement consisted of a proposed park concept plan posted on the Engage Ottawa website with a comment section that was active for approximately three weeks between September 25th and October 13th, 2020. This engagement opportunity was shared among community contacts by the area Ward Councillor. A total of 49 comments on the proposed urban park concept plan were received, including 48 on the English page and 1 on the French page. An additional written comment was also received by email.

Summary of Public Comments and Responses

Overall, most of the comments received on the proposed concept plan for the urban park were positive, however, a number of comments expressed concerns over certain features of the design. Throughout the comments, several improvements to the design were suggested and these have been grouped as follows:

  • Make the park more welcoming and greener by adding grass areas and more trees
  • Reconsider the raised planters and plant trees in ground level shrub or grass beds
  • Include a drinking fountain / bottle filler in the park
  • Ensure the water feature can act as a splash pad
  • Provide additional children’s play opportunities
  • Provide more seating, bike racks, trash and recycling receptacles
  • Provide an area for small group interaction

These suggested improvements will be considered in the preparation of the detailed design of the park.

Next Steps

The focus of this public engagement process has been to gather feedback on the design of the proposed new Urban Park at the corner of Albert Street and Lyon Street. The information learned from comments received during this process will inform the detailed design process for the park. Once the revisions are incorporated into the concept, a revised park plan and a construction timeline will be communicated to the public.
