COVID-19: Vaccines
Background
Ottawa Public Health has a new COVID-19 Vaccine page at OttawaPublicHealth.ca/COVID19Vaccine which has information on the situation in Ottawa, how the vaccines work and considerations for residents. The City of Ottawa's COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Task Force continues work on a plan for vaccine distribution in Ottawa: https://ottawa.ca/en/covid-19-vaccine-distribution-faqs.
It will take many months before large amounts of the population are vaccinated. It is important that Ottawans continue to do what works to reduce the spread of the virus: maintain a two-metre distance from others outside their own household, wear a mask, stay home when sick and wash their hands. In Ottawa, a large amount of spread is happening in private social gatherings such as parties and large family get-togethers. Limiting close contacts is very important in reducing the spread of COVID-19 in the community.
All COVID-19 engagement surveys are currently closed. Please check back regularly as we will update this page to seek ongoing feedback as we continue to navigate next steps.
For the latest information on COVID-19 in Ottawa, visit ottawapublichealth.ca/coronavirus. For information about municipal service changes and updates, please visit ottawa.ca/covid19.

COVID safe activities or events
over 3 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded. What ideas do you have for COVID safe activities and/or events that can increase residents’ sense of community belonging?
areau088over 3 years agoFood festival (poutine fest, hot chocolate fest, chili fest, other winter foods)
Something many local restaurants can partake in to promote local businesses, giving folks a reason to get outside and try different food. Nothing brings people together like food. Vendors and seating would be outdoors of course, hand sanny galore, please provide ALL recyclable or compostable takeaway containers
1 comment1sonja.masonover 3 years agoGrocery store employees should be on the priority list for Covid vaccine, once it is available.
They have worked on the front lines, dealing with vast quantities of people (possibly infected), every day since the beginning of this crises. This would simultaneously reward them, and keep them safe, so that they can continue to provide food for the community, which is an indispensable service to all of us.
0 comment1SpeedyVeganover 3 years agoLimerick contest
Limericks are an accessible form of poetry, and often humorous. I think a contest would get people focusing on something lighthearted during the dark days of winter. You would have to have some rules (nothing lewd, for example), and you could have one per month. Have a suggested $1 donation for each entry, with money going to a business relief fund or the food bank. The best limerick could be rewarded with being published in the councilors' newsletters and perhaps also receive a gift certificate for something like a massage therapy treatment, to ward of the winter blahs.

Stop testing people who are not severely ill. It is a waste of time and money and unrealistically inflates covid cases resulting in unnecessary closures and lockdowns.
2 comments0MikeAover 3 years agoPublic message about spitting
It seems to me that spitting is probably a very ‘transmittable’ behavior in these COVID days…. I do lots of activities that people seem to think it is a normal thing to spit (ie cross country skiing, running, waiting at the bus stop)…lift your face mask and spit without thinking twice about it. I think it would be a very good public message to says spitting is unnecessarily risky to others around you….

0 comment0J Alvaradoover 3 years agoNot necessarily business but a change to the fines
I see a large amount of school aged kids walking around and hanging around in different stores/malls/supermarkets. For me, at least, I would be hesitant to call 311 on them as I know their parents are going to be the ones that will likely pay for any fines. However, if instead of fines they had to do community service for breaking the gathering limits(e.g. if the fine is 800 dollars / minimum in Ontario = 50 hours of community service). The students would be more hesitant to break the rules as they will actually have to work/pay the consequences. I would be less hesitant to call 311 AND these kids would get some work experience under the belt
0 comment0LED Ladyover 3 years agoWe need more information regarding the active cases
I saw on the news this morning that 5 employees of a restaurant have tested positive. I assume that in in the food industry gloves and masks are mandatory. So what went wrong? As the manager of a small company with 7 persons, I would like to understand what happened, so that a similar situation does not occur here. Quoting numbers is good, but it's not enough.
0 comment1FeinDenzover 3 years agoManitoba Makes Ottawans Isolate 14 Days
We should protest to Manitoba Public Health. Our Ottawa Covid case numbers are better than western provinces which do not have to isolate. I have kept a frequent part-time apt. in Winnipeg to serve my clients, clubs & Winnipeg's many attractions. Can your offices try to impress the mutual benefit of allowing federal, technical, financial professionals & families from Ottawa into Manitoba even for 4 or 5 days while being Covid tested? I have not been to my other home, where I lived for 29 years before moving mainly to Ottawa in 2006, for 6 months. My 2 Covid tests on 16th May & this week are negative. Thanks in (p)anticipation, Denzil

Yesterday I had to go to the grocery store and it was a horrible experience. I am claustrophobic and have chronic bronchitis. I cannot wear mask and the law should protect and serve protection for people like me. I suggested the bracelet in my other post. Now, I am also suggesting posters at the entrance of any type of business. At the Superstore, I was verbally attacked and an old man almost hit me. I had to call the store manager to solve the situation. Very sad.

0 comment1Patricia Varandaalmost 4 years agoI am claustrophobic and I cannot wear anything on my face, without triggering panic attacks. I am worried. I won't be able to wear a mask.
I am afraid of retaliation from the people around me , when they see me without a mask. So, to avoid this problem maybe the government could create a bracelet that would be used by the people who are exempted from wearing the mask. This way, no words would need to explain my lack of compliance with the law. We are living in a very weird moment in our society, where small situations generate verbal and physical violence. That is what I am trying to avoid. Bracelet for the people exempted from wearing a mask. Thanks. Patricia

Testing for COVID-19
over 3 years agoCLOSED: This idea tool is now closed.Do you have any ideas on how Ottawa Public Health can make testing for COVID-19 easier to access?
ElizEnviroalmost 4 years agoMobile testing units
Vehicles such as ambulance or bus that visit different neighbourhoods so folks can get tested without having to travel. Well-publicized details. Safely reaching testing centres for those without personal vehicles nearly impossible unless in walking distance (following advice against public transit, taxis, ride-hailing, contact with friends/family while sick).
0 comment4Kayak4everalmost 4 years agoThere is a rumour that people with no symptoms have to self isolate for 14 to 16 days (because of testing delays) if they take a test
This discourages grocery clerks from getting tested just to find pockets of virus
0 comment0ElizEnviroalmost 4 years agoWorkplace surveys for higher-risk occupations
Visiting and mass-testing higher risk, public-facing frontline workplaces, (as has been done with some healthcare workers) to get a better picture of the asymptomatic/community spread. For example: retail/grocery/pharmacy/and public-facing customer service staff, cleaning/janitorial staff, in addition to any measures with healthcare staff such as PSWs, healthcare reception workers, and healthcare workers. Could be organized by business (eg chain/brand, contractor) or geography (eg shopping plaza, business district). Unsure which personal rights/privacy and workplace health & safety policies may be implicated. Who gets scheduled on 'testing day' could be confounding if it makes nonrandom samples. Would also be beneficial as anti-body testing as soon as available

Please do this in Lincolnfields area! Parking lot behind Metro at Lincolnfields Shopping Centre or Park behind Regina Alternative School. It’s Centrally located to Woodpark, Lincolnheights and Britannia.
0 comment0CityChatalmost 4 years agoDrive-thru testing and Waitlist App
A Waitlist App may be useful for managing long lineups and wait-times. Perhaps people can add their names to the waitlist virtually, by phone or in person, and then be notified shortly before their turn. It would avoid on-site crowds and long waits in hot weather. Drive-thru testing may feel safer to many people that are otherwise dissuaded by long waits in crowded lineups or hot weather. It of course needs to be offered alongside testing accessible to those without cars.

Create a marketplace for small businesses with local delivery people. This will encourage local spending and give these businesses access to a delivery network. This will provide jobs for delivery people, increase buying locally and reduce in person shopping to prevent the spread of Covid-19

1 comment8J Alvaradoabout 4 years agoPrioritize Pedestrian Traffic for re-opening hotspots
When the first shops open, there will be certain spots in the city where I wouldn't be surprised to see a huge increase of traffic(byward, the glebe, hintenbourg). These are places in a regular weekend are fairly populated. With the social distancing measures still in place for reopening, additional steps should be taken to ensure the safety of pedestrians. These include: 1. Make certain streets pedestrian traffic only. Creating markings to improve traffic flow (one way/two ways) with approximate social distancing markings 2. For streets that remain open to traffic, consider making sidewalks be "one way" only 3. Increase number of spots for accessible parking in streets where parking is available 4. Make the wear of masks mandatory for these hotspots 5. If possible create a tool where users can see how busy some of these spots are at any point in time. With recommendations on what places to avoid at certain times. Most of these ideas come from what I have experienced walking my dogs in a fairly residential area. I am crossing the streets in a regular basis due to people coming and going that refuse to follow social distancing guidelines.
