What We Heard

In December 2021, the City of Ottawa conducted an online survey to gain public input on existing issues with the intersection as well as ideas for proposed improvements.

Key results from the survey include:

  • Concerns about safety expressed by Pedestrians, Cyclists, and Mobility Device Users
  • Reports of several near-misses, including incidents related to:
    1. Eastbound cars on McArthur Avenue turning right into the FreshCo parking lot at high speeds
    2. Southbound vehicles on Lafontaine Avenue turning at high speeds onto McArthur Avenue eastbound
  • It is difficult to cross McArthur Avenue fully within the duration of the “walk phase”

Survey respondents noted the following improvements as important to them:

  • Improving the quality of bus stops at the intersection
  • Creating better connections between key destinations, including pedestrians carrying groceries from FreshCo plaza to residential areas
  • Making it easier for cyclists to make turns at the intersection
  • Maintenance improvements (e.g., improved snow clearing, snow storage, and drainage)
  • Adding measures to slow down turning vehicles
  • Increasing the space available to pedestrians at the intersection, including the street-corners

The survey is still open for responses until June 8, 2022 at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/mcarthurlafontainestudy
