Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

The City is planning to install 24 new on-street electric vehicle charging stations at 12 sites across Ottawa. The stations are being installed as part of street parking facility improvements and to increase the uptake of electric vehicles in Ottawa. Switching from gas and diesel to electric vehicles is one of the most important actions required to meet Ottawa's target to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 100 per cent by 2050. To meet this target, by 2030, 90 per cent of all new vehicles sold will have to be electric.

The charging stations will primarily be installed in the boulevard: the area between the sidewalk and the street. Each site will be equipped with two Level 2 chargers, which can fully charge an electric vehicle in approximately eight hours. Users will be charged per minute rates like existing public chargers available in the city. The charging stations are expected to be operational in 2021.

This project is being completed with support from the federal government under the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, and Envari, an affiliate of Hydro Ottawa.

Why is the City installing electric vehicle chargers on the street?

The charging stations are intended to increase the uptake of electric vehicles in Ottawa by providing more charging options to residents who may not be able to charge an electric vehicle at home.

One of the concerns many people have about buying an electric vehicle is where they are going to charge it. This is even more true for people who rent their home, live in an apartment or condo, or have an on-street parking permit.

Although these new charging stations are primarily intended to support those who are unable to charge their vehicles at home, they are open to all residents and visitors.

Where will the charging stations be located?

The map below shows the proposed locations. The locations were selected based on:

  • Available space and hydro access for installation and ongoing operations including winter maintenance needs
  • Existing charging station locations
  • Identified need
  • Safety (won't obstruct the sidewalk)
  • Cost
  • Permanency (no planned work leading to a shutdown)

What are the benefits of electric vehicles?

Electric vehicles have many benefits compared to gas and diesel powered vehicles. They are:

  • Better for the climate. The average Canadian driver can reduce their car’s greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 90 per cent.
  • Better for public health. Electric vehicles are quiet and have no tailpipe emissions which means less noise and air pollution.
  • Cheaper to operate and maintain. Electric vehicle drivers save upwards of 60 per cent on maintenance costs and more than 50 per cent on fuel costs.
  • Fun to drive. Electric cars feature better handling and stability and deliver responsive, fast and smooth acceleration.
