The City is looking to identify locations where public electric vehicle charging stations could be installed to support the uptake of electric vehicles in Ottawa. Switching from gas and diesel to electric vehicles is one of the most important actions required to meet Ottawa's target to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 100 per cent by 2050.

To ensure everyone in Ottawa can access an electric vehicle charging station, the City is specifically targeting areas that meet the following criteria:

  • Higher population density/more multi-unit residential buildings
  • High proportion of rental housing
  • Less frequent public transit
  • Areas with lower levels of household income

These types of locations are typically not well served by electric vehicle chargers that are owned by private companies. By selecting these areas, the City is looking to fill existing gaps to ensure more residents have access to a reliable charging station.

The City has applied for funding for these new charging stations from Hydro Ottawa through the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program. Funding through this program is limited to $100,000 so locations that best fit the criteria above will be prioritized. Other criteria and locations will be considered if more funding becomes available.

Suggest a location for electric vehicle charging

From November 30 to January 9 residents were invited to suggest locations for where they would like to see an electric vehicle charging station. Thank you to everyone who provided input. Over 200 locations were suggested. You can view everyone’s suggestions on the map.

Staff will now be reviewing all the submissions and making recommendations for additional charging in Ottawa.
