1 comment0Yany Siek2 months agoThe Suspected Drug Overdose Deaths in Ottawa Tracking Tool/Dashboard
This dynamic, self-serve dashboard provides users with the ability to explore and analyze trends in suspected drug overdose deaths occurring in Ottawa. This is particularly important in light of the ongoing challenges our city (and many other Canadian cities) face. Link: https://lnkd.in/g6DbPgg2 It is live connected to the Suspected Drug Overdose Deaths in Ottawa dataset, refreshing automatically with the latest data every Tuesday. Built in Power BI, the tool is simple and easy to use with various analytical features that provide individuals of all data literacy levels with the ability to understand trends. I hope that the community, particularly organizations helping to fight the opioid crisis, find this analytical tool helpful. Feel free to contact me via linked in at Yany Siek or yanysasiek@gmail.com if you would like to share your thoughts.

0 comment0Matthew Darwinover 4 years agoUse OpenStreetMap base layer
The OpenStreetMap community in Ottawa is very active and works to quickly include updates from open.ottawa.ca into the base map in a timely fashion. The old CKAN based portal uses OSM base map. The new open.ottawa.ca should also use OSM base map. In the ESRI platform, the city can customize which OSM elements appear on the map using vector tiles. https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-living-atlas/mapping/new-osm-vector-basemap/
1 comment4gabesolomonover 4 years agoAdd paving contractor info to street layer
Allow residents to see who paved their street, and when it was done. Looking up RFPs are difficult for the average person. Put the info on a map and residents can click on their street and see who paved it, and when it was last done.

Ideas are reviewed on a quarterly basis by City departments. Approved ideas are adding to the department’s annual open data release plan. If a dataset cannot be released, the rationale will be posted on Engage Ottawa.

Jmikelittlealmost 5 years agoAdd the Ruleset for Each Traffic Light
Each traffic light operates according to a ruleset that determines when it switches. Beg buttons, in-road sensors and dependencies on other lights can impact switches in a manner that is complicated to determine without the ruleset. When this data is available, communities will be able to help the city identify opportunities to improve safety for all road users.
4 comments9mecha3almost 5 years agoList of non-smoking buildings
Many non-smoking building have tonnes of grandfathered (permitted to continue smoking) tenants. When they smoke inside their room, it ends up circulating across the whole building. Listing non-smoking transitional status could work. The simplest way to do this is to list the building population and when the non-smoking rule is implemented. Example: building population = 100, non-smoking rule implemented = August 13, 2019. That would insinuate that there are grandfathered smoking tenants.

An API that would provide the GPS location (and speed) of each of OC Transpo's train. Similar to what GO provides for its trains.
1 comment1DanB65almost 4 years agoMandatory Yearly Bicycle License and Registration Fees
Just like anyone that has the privilege to own a vehicle it must be licensed, registered and insured which helps the economy for maintaining, repairing and creating roadways. Many cyclists ride without proper safety precautions, lights at night, no reflectors, darting in and out of traffic, not using proper HTA rules at stop signs, red lights, etc. Some cyclists will ride in the middle of the traffic lanes impeding vehicles stuck behind them. I understand that cycling is great exercise, causes no pollution and is a great way to get around but it's been my experience as a professional driver that I see more cyclists abusing their right of way even though the City has spent and is spending a lot of money which as a tax payer we all have to pay for. In order to lessen the tax increases for those of us that do not use or rarely use cycling to get around then why not input a yearly license and registration fee specifically for cyclists so they can enjoy and adhere to all the same HTA rules motorists are required to do. The fees collected would be used to help produce, maintain and repair bicycle lanes for all cyclists and possibly help ensure they follow and practice the same motor vehicle rules which I believe could help everyone on the roads.
2 comments1jessicaraeleisover 4 years agoSchedule adherence data for both O-Train lines
OC Transpo has a target of 90% schedule adherence. While OC-Transpo provides schedule adherence data for its bus routes, it does not for the Trillium or Confederation O-Train lines. This data should also be made publicly available so that the public can monitor OC Transpo's progress on reaching its 90% schedule adherence target.
