Gregory Casey Dog Park - New Park Development
Update: 01 November 2024
Thank you to everyone who took interest in the project and participated in the Gregory-Casey Dog Park public consultation.
The consultation statistics show that there were a total of approximately 1300 visits to the English and French web pages. Of those visits, there were a total of:
- 1192 ‘aware’ participants; meaning that they visited at least one of the project pages;
- 439 ‘informed’ participants; meaning that they downloaded a document, visited multiple project pages, and/or participated in the survey; and
- 140 ‘engaged’ participants; meaning that they participated in the survey.
Survey Results:
- 93% own a dog.
- 89% supported providing separate areas for small and large dogs.
- 61% provided comments.
The comments that occurred in a frequency of more than 5% of the ‘engaged’ participants (7 out of 140) are included below:
Comment..........................................................................................................Frequency
- Specifically made comment that they like/approve of the dog park.............. 38
- The park is too small / provide another dog park in Barrhaven.................... 14
- Requested a water fountain.......................................................................... 13
- Requested more shade / keep existing trees/ plant more trees.................... 7
In response to the most frequent requests:
The proposed dog park will encompass as much of the property parcel as possible; no additional lands are available on this site. Another opportunity for a dog park, elsewhere in Barrhaven, will be further explored.
- There is no water or electrical service to the site; therefore, requests for any items that require these services are not possible at this time (fountain, lighting, etc).
- If there are any funds remaining as the project nears completion, additional trees can be incorporated into the design.
Next steps will be to develop the park construction drawings. The park is anticipated to be constructed in the 2025 summer season.
Thank you again for your interest and participation.
Public Consultation (now closed): 27 September - 14 October 2024
The City is looking for your feedback on the proposed plan for a new dog park in Ward 3 (Barrhaven South). The new park, which is approximately 0.67 hectares in area, is generally located south-west of Strandherd Drive, and just north of the Gregory Casey Storm Water Pond.
When reviewing the proposed location and design for the new dog park, it is important to be aware of the future pedestrian, cycling, and vehicular access that will be available (but is not currently built). A 3-season gravel parking lot will be available with access from Borrisokane Road; it will not be available during the winter months. A paved multi-use pathway is also anticipated to lead from the existing parking lot at the Clarke Fields Park BMX facility, under the new Strandherd Drive bridge, and connecting to the existing recreation path around the storm pond. This path will also provide access to the proposed dog park. Please see the attached plan which demonstrates the future access possibilities.
The proposed dog park is currently designed to include:
- A main entrance enclosure to allow for secure leashing and un-leashing
- a large, in-ground waste receptacle, and
- separate entrances to two distinct areas: a small-dog park, and a large-dog park.
Additionally, both the large and small dog areas are proposed to include:
- an area of gravel surfacing (decomposed granite) as well as a grassed area
- an accessible, asphalt path
- metal ‘pee posts’
- benches, and
- proposed and/or existing trees.
You can download and review the Gregory Casey Dog Park Concept Plan and the Pedestrian, Cycling, and Vehicular Access Plan in the Document Library on the right.
Take the survey below to provide your feedback. The survey will be open until Monday, October 14.
